This was a gift for a very young girl
Great book for my daughter
I really wanted to like this book. The topic is an important one; too often the historical contribution of women in computing is swept under the rug. So I really wanted to get an early start at puncturing those social myths for my kids with an accessible story about a great woman from computing history. Sadly, the writing is atrocious. It's ostensibly a simplistic poem, but it constantly breaks meter, so there's no rhythm to it, and the story arc is so scattered, it's difficult to follow as an adult. Grace Hopper is illustrated as a child throughout the story, even after she joins the Navy, so her contribution is diminished to a child version of herself shouting at a computer through a megaphone. The art isn't much better; it has a very flat characteristic that looks rushed and devoid of any charm or style. The whole thing feels like a low-effort attempt to cash in on the legacy of a true hero of computing, and that makes me sad, more than anything. This topic deserves so much better.
This is a good introduction book to Grace Hopper. However, if you are doing a research project on her, you may want to keep looking.
Niece liked this book very much !Thank you
feeling doubly enlightened since reading my second book of amost inspiring series and I am so excited to get the next one!!!!I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!..This one truly delights, filled with insightfrom beginning to end!
This book is a huge hit at home with my 4 and 7 year old (girl and boy), and at my toy store. Kids love the simple, bright pictures. Grown-ups love the intelligently written rhymes that get across the main message and accomplishments of Grace Hopper's innovative life, without boring or confusing the children. There are sixteen, 4-line stanzas, each accompanied by an illustration. The book is perfect for young kids that are just starting to read, and I really like how it is geared towards inspiring girls, yet the drawings and story is not pink and frilly, so it can just as easily be read to boys, too. The main message of the book is that when you use your head "nothing's impossible, you can do it, you bet!"
